Increasingly, if we are to understand the effects of recent and future climate changes on the landscape in Saudi Arabia it is essential that we study the impacts of natural environmental changes in the past. This evidence is clearly recorded in the landscape across Saudi Arabia and especially in Qassim province. Although research on past climate changes has been conducted in coastal locations of the Arabian Peninsula (such as the Wahiba Sands in Oman and in the United Arab Emirates) and in mountainous areas (e.g. Oman and Yemen) virtually no research has been conducted in the central Arid core of Arabia (i.e. central Saudi Arabia). This desperate need for detailed research in this location has resulted in the collaboration of myself, Dr Sue McLaren from the Geography Department at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom and Mr Ahmed Al Dughairi from the Department of Geography at Qassim University. This type of collaboration is essential to advance our understanding of climatic changes in the Qassim area as it combines Ahmed’s expertise of the physical geography of the study area and my expertise in Quaternary studies, climatic changes in dryland environments and numerical dating techniques. We are attempting to understand how both the spatial and temporal patterns of environmental processes changed as a result of climatic fluctuations between wetter and drier phases over timescales of thousands of years. The effects of past climatic changes inform us about how this landscape responds to natural environmental variations. This research is essential if we are to gain a good comprehension of the impacts of environmental change in the past and the implications for climatic changes both now and in the future in the Buraydah area.
